#2 Getting Started!

What is Web 2.0?

Congratulations on joining MMSCL 2.0!

Beth Gallaway gave us an introduction to Web 2.0 – now it’s time to experience it firsthand!

Web 2.0 is used to describe the explosion of interactive “second-generation” internet services including social networks, blogs and wikis which rely on the participation and creativity of all users to collaborate and create online communities.

Web 2.0 has removed many of the barriers to participation that existed on the internet. You don’t need to know xml or be a webmaster to have your thoughts, pictures, movies, recipes, and more out there on the internet.

Web 1.0 VS Web 2.0
Webmasters control content
Anyone can add content
Need extensive technical knowledge
Need little technical knowledge
Reading websites
Interacting on websites

Over the next few weeks we’ll be exploring blogs, wikis, rss feeds, tagging and other 2.0 technologies. You'll most likely find that some of these tools are already familiar to you while you've never heard of others. Take a minute to read the About MMSCL 2.0 page to familiarize yourself with the entire program.

To receive credit for this exercise:
Leave a comment below describing your thoughts on Beth Gallaway's presentation and 2.0 in general.

Be sure to visit the staff page to submit this exercise as described in exercise #1. You will need to log your progress after completing each exercise in the MMSCL 2.0 program.

I think Beth had a lot of good things to say about 2.0 and libraries! If you'd like to see the whole video that she showed at the beginning of her presentations, it's here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLlGopyXT_g

For the majority of us forward thinkers I think Beth Galloway’s presentation was interesting for others though I think some sort of bridge program may have been advisable. I am not sure if the audience as a whole was able to follow her without difficulty. If there had been some sort of brief explanation of terms or planned pre information packet her program may have reached and enticed more of the audience. I think reviewing the above link is a great idea.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the 2.0 presentation in December. I just watched the youtube video lorraine posted and I think that it said it all. The web is forever evolving, and we all have a part in it. It is amazing how not even four years ago in library school, they were merely teaching us codes to design a website. Now, you are taught wikis, blogs, etc.

While Beth's presentation served its purpose, I don't think one really knows what 2.0 is until he/she starts using some of the tools

Linda said...

I thought the presentation was really great and informative. I already use a lot of the things she talked about but I'm excited to learn more.

I understand the need to follow new technologies, however I am fearful that we are stepping far away from what I thought libraries were supposed to be; Books (remember them?) and personal face to face service.

I didn't have the opportunity to see the full presentation. What I did see and hear sounded very interesting, but since I'm new to Web 2.0, I think that it will take a little time and effort to get comfortable with it all.

Hey everybody, I love this technology, especially google reader! Do yourself a favor and try it out.

I think Anne Marie's comment is a good one. I have much to learn but am looking forward to watching it all unfold.

I just so happen to be taking a web 2.0 class this semester so this program would be a good way for me to reinforce what I am already learning in class.

I thought that Beth was very informative. I am very happy to see the technology that I use almost everyday is now being used as a tool for public libraries.

Beth had good points about web 2.0, but until you play around with the new technology you can not appreciate its full potential.

the Web 2.0 presentation was great

I felt that Beth's presentation was helpful in that it expanded my knowledge of web 2.0. It amazed me to find how technologically advanced we are becoming but how little people know about it.

darl68 said...

While I think Beth was informative, I believe hands-on is always more beneficial than a presentation.

Margie said...

I enjoyed the meeting because I know nothing about computers and Beth really peaked my interest.

I thought the presentation was quite informative. I agree with Annemarie's comment about it being a bit overwhelming for some. A lot of information was crammed into a short period of time. You really don't get a feel for the technology unless you jump right in and do it.

I enjoyed the presentation by Beth and found it to be very informative. Technology is forever changing and is can be difficult to keep up with. I am looking forward to learning more about Web 2.0.

I thought the presentation was informative. Not being the most computer savy person, I look forward to learning some of the technology discussed.

I think it may take me a while to get up to speed with web2.0, but I will. I will probably be asking for help from my colleagues.

Maureen said...

In regards to our 2.0 - I thought the exercises were going to be more like a tutorial - it was a little confusing getting started, but I think I've got it now. Thanks Darlene for your help!

I liked how Beth presented this information to us,And i think this will be a great tool for everybody to try out!!!

I'll be excited to see how we incorporate some of this technology for our patrons!

I think the presentation was very informative. I am looking forward to learning new things. It will take me time to get use to working with it, but I think the activities will make it fun.

I was unable to attend the meeting on Web 2.0, from what I understand it was very informative, I wish that I could've been there! I like Jenn, do enjoy using books for research, however, I really look foward to learning more about Web 2.0. Hopefully, I am not too technologically challenged!! :oD

congrats to meee !!!

Missed the presentation.
Watched the video.
This would be a good exercise for employees to demonstrate a familiarity with some things a little closer to home i.e. the way the library actually operates, its policies and proceedures. Personally I'd rather see the staff especially clerks and pages demonstrate their knowledge of the library before they become masters of the Web 2.0

alexandraK said...

The presentation itself was very informative and Beth is a great speaker. Having the whole staff familiarize themselves with all these new Web 2.0 technologies is a good idea. I am sure Beth would have had more people contribute if they were exposed to it beforehand.

The presentation covered many aspects of WEB 2.0 This technology will play a major part in the way libraries operate in the future. I have personally had the opportunity to see the potential of this technology, through the use of my film blog, my space, and facebook. I look forward to seeing classes, that will teach our patrons about the uses of this technology.

Not familiar with all the new technology I found Beth's presentation to be somewhat overwhelming. It was presented as though everyone was on the same knowledge level. I know that will all change as I work each new Web 2.0 activity. Thanks for the opportunity.

Tater Tot said...

Beth presented a lot of information but I believe that hands on Web 2.0 will lead to a better understanding of these new technologies.

I'm so proud that our library supports the staff in learning web 2.0 activities. And what a great way learn--all together! Beth's presentation gave a good overview, but this hands on challenge, with plenty of friendly support, is a great way to learn about this generation of web tools...before even newer stuff comes along.

I was unable to attend the meeting for this program and i think it would have helped to be there. I will probably be asking for help along the way but i don't think it will be too bad, almost second nature once you get into it.

Good job

Unfortunately, i was not here for Beth's presentation but it's about time i get to know 2.0 more than i already do. My knowledge of it is limited so far.

I was unable to attend the presentation but I did watch the video. It is so amazing how much I do not understand about Web 2.0. I always felt computer savvy being that I grew up computer age but all of this is even knew to me.

I learned some new things. But i think Beth's presentation could have been better. It was lackluster

I thought the presentation was informative. While I am already doing some of the applications, I've learned that there is so much more out there.

I thought the presentation was good.

I thought Beth's presentation introduced a solid starting point for an introduction to staff of 2.0 technologies and philosophies. Everything she had pointed out is something that is free to use and readily available. What I don't remember was her making too much of a point that there is much potential for abuse (Wikipedia for example).

YadaThis said...

I thought I knew the internet until Beth came along! No, I had a general idea of what she was talking about, but there were some points in her presentation that I did not know about....guess I'll learn about them now!

Pina said...

I thought the presentation was informative. Many of us have been using 2.0 but did not know the technical terms. Looking forward to learning, and then helping others to learn.

Tara said...

I LOVE the new technology...I think it is great that the library is encouraging all the staff to become proficient in all aspects of Web 2.0, Most of us use only a piece or two and barely have any idea what we can do with it. The library is sooo much more then books (it always has been). Personally I think all people who work in a library (especially LIBRARIANS) should demonstrate a willingness to be friendly and helpful to patrons and all staff alike.

Mary D said...

I love to learn new things and I am very comfortable with the computer. However, Beth's presentation opened my eyes to how much I do not know and how much there is to learn.

Ernie said...

The program was very informative, I learned alot.

JK said...

I was unable to attend the presentation. Did watch the Youtube video. To be honest, I don't spend anymore time on the computer than I absolutely have to. I would rather do housework than sit on a computer emailing, blogging and such. But I'm up for the challenge and learning experience.

it was very informative :)

Beth's presentation was very interesting. Since she's visited Library, I feel it has given the department an opportunity to learn and explore new and upcoming technology other than checking in/out books.

I think that its great the library is using new technology in means of communication, programs etc. I also think that its wonderful we ALL are learning new ways to better ourselves in this world thats changing so much.

The presentation was very interesting. Web 2.0 allows for collaboration like never before and thats a very cool thing.

When I had heard about the web 2.0 at first I was very curious about it, but now after reading about it and watching that presentation on youtube, I'm excited to see what else is involved in this program and finish the activities!

I found it to be an interesting presentation and it made me realize there is so much more I need to learn to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to technology.

Web 2.0 WOW!! What can I say? Overwhelming, scary, intimidating? Well, we'll see! All I know about computers is what I need to know at circ, and what I need to know to get to my e-mail and favorites at home. I'll take the challenge and see how far I get and how much I understand. Wish me luck!!!

Anonymous said...

Though I am happy to delve into Web 2.0 to discover new things for myself, I am not sure how easily it will translate into the patrons who use our public computers. Many of them use our PCs for very basic purposes, and it seems that only those who are seeking the newer technologies on the web would bother to listen/learn from us about web 2.0.

VideoGal said...

I think Beth has made this quite interesting. and easy to follow.

Xiny said...

I was unable to attend the full presentation that Beth Galloway gave in Decemeber. But I was there for the second mini presentation before the staff party and I felt that it was a positive reinforcement of new technology.

Anonymous said...

I thought Beth's presentation was very informative and was constructed well. This really doesn't pertain to me since I'm already aware of Web 2.0 I'm a real computer buff so I can't say I learned anything new, but I will state that I think it was an eye-opener for some of our staff getting familiar with the internet's new format.

Michelle said...

I thought the presentation was very informative. I must be honest that I knew very little about Web 2.0 and this presentation was perfect for me.
